MXterm Pro
A native MobaXterm alternative for macOS

MobaXterm for Mac: Native macOS SSH & SFTP Client

MobaXterm is a Windows application, so Mac developers need another tool. MXterm Pro brings a built-in SFTP panel, saved SSH hosts, a multi-agent Control Room and Command Recipes (Cmd+J) natively to macOS. It has no X11 server and none of MobaXterm's other protocols.

The short answer

Mobatek describes MobaXterm as a Windows application and lists no Mac version, so Mac users need another tool. MXterm Pro is a native macOS and Windows app that covers the SSH and SFTP side of MobaXterm: saved hosts, a docked file panel, a remote editor and split panes. It has no X11 server, RDP, VNC or serial support, so keep MobaXterm if you rely on those.

Below you will find a feature-by-feature map with the gaps, then a migration walkthrough. For why MobaXterm never came to Mac and what Wine or CrossOver give you, read the MobaXterm for Mac guide.

Who should pick which

Pick MXterm Pro if

You work on a Mac or a Windows PC and mostly need SSH, SFTP and several terminal panes in one window. It also fits if you run AI coding CLIs such as Claude Code or Codex next to your servers.

Stay with MobaXterm if

You need an X11 server, RDP, VNC, Telnet or serial sessions in one tool, or macros. Its feature list covers those and MXterm Pro does not. MXterm Pro is also newer, so read its changelog first.

Use iTerm2 or plain ssh if

You only want a better local terminal. iTerm2 is free software under GPL v2 and runs on macOS only. Pair it with scp, rsync or a separate file-transfer app when you need to move files.

The MobaXterm parts that carry over to Mac

Built for macOS with Tauri 2, a Rust PTY backend and xterm.js rendering.

SFTP GUI

Browse a remote host in a side panel, drag and drop files to upload, edit remote files in a Monaco editor, and set permissions with a 3×3 checkbox grid. Or type the octal code directly (755, 644).

Saved SSH Session Manager

Bookmark your SSH hosts with saved auth methods, and reconnect in one click instead of retyping connection strings.

Command Recipes & Control Room

Press Cmd+J for Command Recipes: type a task like finding large files and get a matching ready-made Linux command. Run parallel Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini CLI sessions in split panes.

MobaXterm's features page lists nothing like the Control Room, where several AI agents share a room, or git worktree isolation, which gives each agent pane its own worktree. Move your MobaXterm sessions to MXterm Pro

  1. 1

    Install the app

Download the .dmg from this page. Free needs no account. The app runs on macOS 10.15 or newer.

  2. 2

    Export your sessions from MobaXterm

Save them as a .mxtsessions file and copy it to your Mac. Check Mobatek's documentation for the current menu path.

  3. 3

    Import the file

Press Shift+Cmd+H to open the SSH manager, click Import and pick the file. The picker accepts .mxtsessions, .config, .json, .txt and .ini files.

  4. 4

    Read the result

The app reports how many hosts it added, or that it found none. On the Free plan the import stops at 5 saved hosts and shows the upgrade prompt.

  5. 5

    Fix each host

Every MobaXterm host arrives in a group named MobaXterm with password authentication. Open it, switch to your key file or agent, and add a jump host if you used a gateway.

  6. 6

    Test, then connect

Test is a TCP check only, so it does not prove your login works. Connect opens an SSH tab. Type the password once and the SFTP panel reuses that connection.

What the .mxtsessions import reads

A session line looks like Name=#icon#0%host%port%user%..., where # separates groups and % separates the fields of the session group. The importer takes session type 0 (SSH) and reads host, port and user from the fields after it, whatever the icon number. It keeps the session name, decodes MobaXterm's escaped characters, and defaults to port 22 and user root when those fields are empty or invalid. Imported hosts go in a group named MobaXterm. Folders, passwords, key files, gateways, X11 settings, macros and other session types are ignored.

Look over each host after the import. Since 1.1.9 the importer reads the layout that third-party documentation describes for MobaXterm exports, with a % between the fields of the session group, and its test uses a line from that documentation. It has not been checked against a real MobaXterm export.

A ~/.ssh/config file is the safer route. The importer reads Host, HostName, User, Port and the first IdentityFile, skips wildcard blocks, ignores ProxyJump and puts hosts in a group named Imported. JSON files with name, host, port, username, keyPath and authType fields also import. Importing a file twice adds every host twice.

Limits and caveats

Free limits

Free has no pane limit and allows 5 saved SSH hosts, 2 Control Room members per room and 1 saved Machine. Every SFTP feature is on Free. The other numbers are the app's defaults, and mxterm.net can override them for promotions.

Pro

Pro lifts those caps. Solo costs $29 one-time for 3 devices as of September 2026, and larger seat plans are on the pricing page.

Windows and Linux

Windows x64 builds are unsigned, so SmartScreen shows Unknown publisher. SSH, SFTP and tunnels on Windows have not been verified. No Linux build is distributed.

Server stats bar

The uptime, CPU, RAM and disk bar works only on Linux servers that have python3.

FAQ

Is there an official MobaXterm for Mac?

Mobatek describes MobaXterm as a Windows application and lists no Mac version, as of September 2026. Wine and CrossOver can run it. The MobaXterm for Mac guide covers what that gives you.

Does MXterm Pro have an X11 server?

No. The app has no built-in X server and no X11 setting on saved hosts. If you run remote graphical apps every day, keep MobaXterm for that.

Does MXterm Pro have dual-pane SFTP?

No. It is one remote panel docked beside an SSH tab, with no local tree next to it. To send local files, drop them from Finder onto the panel or use the upload button.

Will my MobaXterm sessions import?

Probably, for SSH sessions. The importer reads the name, host, port and user of each SSH session in a .mxtsessions export and skips other session types. It follows the format as third-party documentation describes it, so check every host after the import, or import a ~/.ssh/config file instead.

Do my saved passwords and keys come across?

No. The importer does not read passwords or key files. Add them on each host. Saved passwords go to the OS keychain.

Is MXterm Pro free?

There is a Free tier with the limits listed above and full SFTP. Pro removes the limits for a one-time price, with no subscription. Solo is $29 for 3 devices as of September 2026.

Does MXterm Pro run on Windows too?

Yes, on Windows x64. The installer is unsigned, so SmartScreen warns on the first run.
