MXterm Pro vs MobaXterm
MXterm Pro is a workable MobaXterm alternative if you use a Mac, or if you mostly need SSH, SFTP and several AI coding agents in one window. It is not a full replacement. MobaXterm is still the better tool for an X11 server, embedded servers, RDP and VNC, serial sessions and Windows-only workflows.
Who should stay, and who should switch
Stay with MobaXterm if you work on Windows and rely on its embedded X11 server to show remote GUI programs. The same goes for its embedded servers, RDP and VNC sessions, serial sessions or macro recorder. MXterm Pro has none of these, so if you use them daily, stay.
Pick MXterm Pro if you work on a Mac, since MobaXterm's own site describes a Windows product. It also fits if you run several AI coding agents next to your servers. You get an SSH host manager, an SFTP panel and a Control Room in one window. On Windows it is a newer option.
MobaXterm details come from mobaxterm.mobatek.net as of September 2026. MXterm Pro cells describe the current app.
Native on macOS, with a Windows build too
MobaXterm's own site describes a toolbox for the Windows desktop, with an embedded X server and Cygwin commands. MXterm Pro is a Rust and Tauri 2 app. Its terminals are real PTYs rendered with xterm.js, and SSH tabs run the system ssh command. It ships as a notarized macOS build and an unsigned Windows x64 installer.
Control Room for AI coding agents
MobaXterm's features page lists no AI agent tooling. MXterm Pro launches 27 coding agents, including Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI, in split panes. Join panes to a Control Room from the pane header. You can then message every member or hand a task to one agent. Delivery waits until the pane is quiet and you have stopped typing.
Optional git worktree isolation gives each agent its own branch, which lowers the chance of edit collisions. It does not sandbox anything. A pane is as powerful as the shell behind it, so an agent in a pane has real shell access.
SFTP panel and remote editor
Connect to a saved host and an SFTP panel docks beside the terminal. Upload files or folders by drag and drop and download to your Downloads folder. Set permissions with an octal chmod matrix, or search file contents with remote grep. Text files up to 5 MB open in a Monaco editor. A conflict guard stops a save if the server copy changed.
Command Recipes, not a macro recorder
Press Cmd+J to open Command Recipes, a keyword table of 13 stock Linux commands for things like open ports, large files, memory use and Docker cleanup. Insert & Run types the command into the pane. No AI model is involved, and it is not a macro recorder like the one in MobaXterm.
Token Meter and Markdown reports
If you run Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or omp, the Token Meter in the title bar shows spend counted from each agent's own local transcripts. Claude plan limits are opt-in and macOS only. In a Control Room, the Report (.md) button exports the roster and discussion as a Markdown file for your team.
Moving your MobaXterm sessions over
- 1
Export from MobaXterm
Right-click a sessions folder and choose Export sessions from this folder, as MobaXterm's documentation describes. Keep the exported file somewhere you can find it. MXterm Pro reads only SSH sessions from it, so RDP, VNC and other entries are skipped.
- 2
Import in MXterm Pro
Press Cmd+Shift+H (Ctrl+Shift+H on Windows) to open the SSH manager, click Import and pick the file. It accepts .mxtsessions, .ini, .txt, .config and .json files. An OpenSSH config file imports the same way. The file is read on your machine.
- 3
Check what arrived
Each SSH session becomes a host with its name, host, port and username, in a group called MobaXterm. Folders, key files, saved passwords, jump hosts and other session types are not carried over. A missing username becomes root. If no entry looks like an SSH session, the app says no valid host configuration was found.
- 4
Set up authentication
Open each host and add a key file or a password. A saved password goes to the OS keychain but is not typed for you, so enter it once in the terminal. The Test button only checks that the port answers. It does not log in.
- 5
Watch the Free cap
The Free tier holds 5 saved SSH hosts in total. An import fills the free slots and skips the rest, and the alert tells you how many were added. The upgrade prompt appears when a host is refused. Pro has no host cap.
Limits and caveats
The Windows build is x64 only and its installer is not code-signed, so SmartScreen shows Unknown publisher on the first run. SSH tabs use the system ssh command, and SSH, SFTP and tunnels on Windows have not been verified. If Windows is your main machine, keep MobaXterm alongside it at first.
There is no X11 server, no embedded servers, no serial sessions, no RDP or VNC viewer and no macro recorder. Port forwarding is local only. The live CPU, RAM and disk bar works on Linux servers that have python3. The SFTP panel shows one remote side, with no local pane.
MXterm Pro is a young product and ships updates often, so it has less time in the field. The interface comes in 11 languages, and there are 10 dark themes. Linux code paths exist, but there is no Linux download.
Questions before you switch
Is MXterm Pro a full MobaXterm replacement?
No. It covers saved SSH hosts, SFTP, remote editing, jump hosts and local port forwards. It has no X11 server, embedded servers, serial sessions, RDP or VNC viewer or macro recorder. If you depend on those, keep MobaXterm for them.
Can I run MobaXterm on a Mac?
MobaXterm's own site describes it as a toolbox for the Windows desktop. Some people run it through Wine or CrossOver, which the MobaXterm for Mac guide covers. A native option avoids that extra layer. MXterm Pro is native on macOS and also runs on Windows x64.
Will my MobaXterm sessions import?
SSH sessions do: name, host, port and username, in a group called MobaXterm. Key files, saved passwords, folders, jump hosts and other session types do not. You set authentication for each host afterward, and Free stops at 5 saved hosts in total.
Does MXterm Pro work on Windows?
Yes, as a Windows x64 build with an unsigned installer, so SmartScreen warns on the first run. Some features are macOS only, such as Claude plan limits in the Token Meter and click-to-pane notifications.
What does it cost?
Free has no pane limit and allows 5 saved SSH hosts, 2 members per Control Room and 1 saved Machine. Pro is a one-time purchase from $29 for 3 devices, with Mac and Windows counted together. The host, member and Machine numbers are built-in defaults that mxterm.net can override.
Does MXterm Pro sandbox AI agents?
No. A pane is a real shell, so an agent in it can run anything you could. Worktree isolation lowers the chance that agents overwrite each other's edits. A guardrail asks before 11 destructive command patterns typed in a pane, but it does not cover Control Room deliveries.
